This month is fall prep month! Summer is not over, and neither is our long, marvelous growing season. The Augusta area has been been blessed with rain the last few days, so it’s a good time to pull those weeds & plant some seeds. Stay hydrated, though, the temps are rising.
July August To-Do’s
- Mulch your flower & veggie beds to conserve moisture & keep heavy rain from splashing back up to your plants. Use pinestraw or cardboard covered with shredded mulch
- Deadhead just about everything! perennials, annuals & herbs
- Sow seeds of zinnias, sunflowers, broom corn, celosia, cosmos -order from www.johnnyseeds.com
- Bush, pole & lima beans & butterpeas can be planted from seed til August
- Plant cucumber & crookneck squash from seed & watch them take off!
- Blackeyed – California #5, Pinkeyed – Purple Hull FVR, Cream Pea–UGA says you can keeping sowing these til mid August!

- You must get some okra in the ground by mid-month- try Burgundy Okra for an unusual twist
- Buy cauliflower, kale & broccoli transplants once you see them in garden stores later this month
