Last week we shared ideas about the luscious Oakleaf Hydrangea. This shrub loves part shade and is agreeable for cutting and flaunts days of beauty in a vase! This week, let’s look at another possibility for cheerful summer bouquets!
Sometimes when you plant annuals and perennials, you think only of their visual beauty as seen from afar. However, using the mind set of purposeful gardening, you will begin to select plants that have added value such as the summer bouquets we are enjoying this summer! Last week, I gathered a fist full of Indigo, Knockout roses, sweet William which provide lovely color. Then I added a few stems of  variegated pittosporum, nandina, and ‘Golden Mop’ cypress to give some depth to the easy bouquet. That is it. From that fist full of beauties I was able to create several small bouquets for teachers and students on the last day of school!
Sweet nosegays are a touching thank you, and easy to create!
So as you plan your summer outing to the big nursery sales, think about what you’d like to plant that will give you that “added value” down the road.
