Flower Arranging in the Woods

 

Hey.

Just thought I would post a bit today about FlowerCamp.

We have a place in Burke County, GA which is about an hour drive from Augusta. Once you arrive at our “farm”–no cows, no chickens, just trees–you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The property is surrounded by 180 acres + of Southern pines. Our neighbors are cows and peanut or cotton plants depending on the year! It is quiet and there are no distractions except for birds chirping and the Sardis wind gently blowing.

About 7 years ago, I offered to do a flower arranging class as a give away for my alma mater, Aquinas High School. They have an annual fundraiser shindig which has silent auction, live auction and good food and drink.

FlowerCamp was born.

About 12 ladies signed up for the class(their picture is at very bottom), and a couple of friends help me serve a Southern Living inspired basket of lunch goodies, Bloody Mary’s we called “Zinnia Zingers” and yes, the flower arranging class!

Since then, I’ve offered FlowerCamp for 3 or 4 days during the last part of September. Most years I still have flowers blooming in the field, and I count on Mother Nature a good bit, too for all the beauty surrounding the property. People who come to this workshop leave with a much greater appreciation for what is growing around them, how to put natural materials together to create unique arrangements that appeal to the eye. We teach the basics of texture, color, form and shape so that participants will go home excited to grab and snip from their own yards designing their own works of art!

I am excited again about FlowerCamp.

We will create the popular flower crowns you’ve been seeing lately– floral designers create for wedding photo shoots, magazine shoots, high school senior pics etc. This will be our warm up–ice breaker. Then we move on to the basics of floral design and hands on putting these lovely creations together. This year we continue to focus on a more natural approach to arranging, but also how to add a bit of sophistication to home grown arrangements–I have a check list for you this year, too, which is a good starting point for designing or re-designing/updating your yard. Including plants that have a fair ROI (that is money talk for return on investment) is important and sustainable!
