August is almost gone!
It’s hot, but there is plenty to do in the garden to prepare for FALL!
- Keep beds mulched with pine straw or wood chips. This conserves moisture and lessens disease.
- Some tree companies offer free wood chips…
- Continue deadheading annuals for fall flush of blooms
- Order spring blooming bulbs and corms now
-  I met Brent & Becky of B &B’s Bulbs last year. Check them out.  Also Easy to Grow Bulbs.
Eager gardeners-pick up seeds of pansies, snapdragons and sweet allysum  for sowing in a shady spot next month
I am starting hollyhocks from seed this month.
As of today, I’ve not seen any veggie transplants for fall. Let me know when you do!
Plan your late fall “menu”; generate a list from the following options:
Easy to Grow SeedsÂ
beets
carrot
cucumber & squash(no later than 8/31)
lettuce
radish
spinach
turnips
chard
bok choi, pac choi
Transplants
broccoli
cauliflower
cabbage
collards
kale
mustard greens
Also, check out Johnny’s Select Seeds, Seeds of Change, and Kitchen Garden online.
If you are ambitious, try cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, kale and onion from seed in a shady section of your garden.
Experiment with this list.
Check the veggies you like.
One source states that 6-12 broccoli plants will be enough for a family.
After 3 years with 6 plants, we need 12! We eat a LOT of broccoli!
We love beets, too, so I’ve ordered “golden” beets and regular “red” beets from Johnny’s.
Play with different varieties of the veggies to add color to your plate this fall/winter!
see you.
