Although, we all know that it very well COULD snow by Christmas day in Augusta; I was looking at last year’s post about keeping the birds fed in winter. The birds are singing away this morning eating the messy seed that has sprouted into millet, munching on old perennial plants gone to seed, and enjoying the fresh peanut butter pine cone given as a gift.  I just filled 4 feeders outside the kitchen window, and hung 3 fatty suet cakes in the crab apple tree. Before Christmas, I shared some leftover rose hips from last week’s arrangements by tying the hips with Christmas ribbon and placed in the “suet treeâ€.
Your perennials that have gone to seed are another natural food source. Although not very attractive, your swamp sunflowers and coneflowers provide snacks for the energy-burning birds outside. Unfortunately, the yard guys thought they were helping and cut all my “gone to seed†plants back…
