It’s like a fairy land in my backyard. Camellias are blooming abundantly, so bring some inside to enjoy before we have another hard freeze. My mother is always giving me what I call “Camellia dishes”. These crystal bowls must have been the wedding gift of her time, but they are perfect for floating Camellia blossoms.
Though Camellias originated in China and Japan, they are truly southern, next to magnolia, of course. My neighbor, Mr. Stutts, has hundreds of Camellia bushes that he has propagated through the years. There are two types of Camellia that grow here–Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua. These shrubs are ideal evergreens which provide the added perk of huge blossoms from November through February. I’ve replaced several lollipop landscape shrubs with Camellias in the front yard to add a bit of zip. If you are working on your landscape, consider Camellias to add charm to your yard.
My grandmother, Louise, painted Camellias. She found the same beauty that I do in these accomplished shrubs. I am taking them for an update –new mat and frame!
If you still have Camellias surviving the drop in temps, pluck an arm full and bring inside to brighten your day!

Mary Louise,
Just reading your blog and saw the photos of your camellias above. I have a framed picture almost identical by Margaret Hawkins Wright. That wasn’t your grandmother by any chance, was it?
Looking at seed catalogs…fun, fun, fun!
