Today I ventured out to try a new type of physical exercise/movement. After months of busy weekends, I finally accepted Phyllis’ invite  to the “bring a friend” day at our local CrossFit location. Not only is Phyllis a seasoned trainer, but she placed 22nd in the WORLD for CrossFit Open. No pressure. Right????  So two scary things for me! Phyllis ,the Champion(who is really a wonderful person), AND all those BIG TIRES, battling ropes, rock climbing.
9:50am.
I could not get out of the car.
Phyllis is going to find about a hundred missed calls from me between 9:50 and 10:00. She probably thought I would chicken out anyway, so she just didn’t answer the phone. No, she was there, among the tires, ropes and contraptions, waiting for me! We had a great time. Phyllis was encouraging, especially when we had to do the GHD-glute, ham developer. Scary! Those phobic “Smith” genes kicking in -BIG TIME!
Our WOD or workout of the day was in honor of Zach, a veteran CrossFitter who is moving from Augusta. Here is the detail:
Both partners must complete the following tasks while the other holds a plank position. You will both do all tasks. Example: Zach does 20 tire flips while Joshua holds the plank. Then Joshua does the 20 tire flips while Zach holds the plank. If the partner in the plank comes out of that position, the partner must stop reps until they are back in plank.
Â
20 tire flips
30 wall ball 20/14
40 GHD
50 hip extensions
60 squats
70 double unders
I’m sure Phyllis was screaming in her head, “Come on girl, flip those tires!” as she patiently held
CrossFit is not for everyone. We are all different. I am going to venture out and try the Fundamentals sessions where they teach newbies the proper form and techniques that coincide with the WOD’s. It’s good to shake the body up!
I’ve come a long way with regard to fitness. I flunked PE my Junior year because I hated the PE teacher. I never dressed out. Ms. Griffin had a huge impact on my high school years. She was partial to the girls who played sports, so PE days were on the softball field, at the volleyball net, or on the basketball court. All of which I detested.
I was the only high school Senior to take PE the following year. Lucky for me, Ms. Griffin left and a vision appeared to me! Aerobics and strength training. I think this was about the same time Jane Fonda was big! Since then, I’ve never been afraid, and I encourage people to keep sampling different types of fitness.
When you make that cross over to fitness, you will know it and you’ll never look back!
see you.
