A lively local interior decorator gave me three rules on freshening up the house:
- decorate what you see
- shop with what you have
- make a list
My kind of girl. Lists. Using what you have. As I tidied up the garden yesterday, I thought about these guidelines, and started putting them into practice. I stood outside the garden, looked at the entrance and saw that it needed:
- color at the entrance to the garden, most of my petunias and salvia are crispy.
- a blanket of mulch or pinestraw to neaten it up
- toss everything dead
- Spread the tangled Butterfly Bushes around the garden
So, I am off to get a couple of replacement annuals for the entry pots, a bit of straw, and I shovel pruned (tossed) everything dead. I’ll divide the Butterfly Bush once it cools off a bit. This approach makes the work of gardening manageable. I feel like I’ve accomplished something. Now on to the weeding and planting a fall crop!
Take a step back, look at your garden. Decorate what you see.
see you

This was a timely post for me! We’re are in the process of making some changes with the brick patio in our backyard (fire pit, seating (benches? adirondak chairs?) and with your advice (1. decorate what you see
2. shop with what you have and 3. make a list) I now have some direction!
