I just placed an order at the Chick fi A* drive thru, and atypically, had to wait a minute or two. That was just enough time to notice the landscape plantings in the drive through area. The plants caught my eye when I first pulled in, but then I was overwhelmed by purple fountain grass, lantana, verbena, canna, loropetalum, begonia, salvia, mexican petunia, and elephant ears combined with zebra grass, knock out roses, hydrangea and nandina.
It was just a bit much for the small space not to mention my eyeballs. In addition to the multitude of types of plants was the schizophrenic variety in texture and color. Â This reminds me of going to a place where someone has placed too much artwork on the walls. One needs to rest the eyes on beauty. Â You know the feeling when you go to Publix, and the cashier asks if you found every thing you needed– you reply- Â “and then some”!
So as the days cool down and you find yourself “hungry” at your local garden store or upcoming wholesaler sale, think about Chick fil A.
A few tips for fall planning before planting:
- less is more
- limit your color to three
- use texture, but not too much- grasses, shrubs

All of the fast food places look like this….not just Chick fil a. I like to look at these plantings as an example of what does well usually in full sun with little care. I didn’t see the plant that I really liked in the picture though.
