Wednesday: What’s Up?
The pumpkins are up!
A few years ago, Robert & I conducted a field trial in conjunction with the University of Georgia to
test out a new pumpkin seed bred specifically for South Georgia farmers.
There are many pumpkin growers throughout Georgia, but due to the high heat compounded by high humidity in South Georgia,
pumpkins have not been a consistent crop.
We’ve had success growing the pumpkins, but like other growers, farming has its high and low points.
Deer, crows, drought, no help- all low points of farming.
There is much work accomplished before harvesting the deeply ridged, peachy beauties in September.
- ground tilled and smoothed
- lots of weeding
- hills formed for seed starting
- planting seeds
- watering & praying for rain
- war with deer and crows
- fertilization, watering, weeding
- HARVEST!
The “glow” of farming begins when people start calling you about these pumpkins
wondering if we are selling again this year! The thrill of pulling a 25 foot trailer behind
the mom mobile and stopping at office buildings is indescribable…
Hope to see you in September with a truckload full of these spunky Orange Bulldog pumpkins!
see you
