Twice a year, McCorkle’s Nursery in Dearing, GA opens their wholesale plant selection to the public. My friend, Annie, asked me to join her. She has been several times, and knows the routine.  I was amused to see men all bowed up and standing guard over their stunning white Agapanthus (Lily of the Nile) selections.
If you are a newbie at this, you may want to prepare before you go. These people are serious. I am here to help you fit right in!
1. Â List. You must take a list with you otherwise you will buy everything in sight, never plant and kick yourself for going. Â Inventory your yard and garden. What do you really need? Review your Southern Living Garden book or your regional book to double check light requirements, watering, etc. for desired plant. Take the book with you- some plants are labeled with incorrect label!
2. Â Take a cart. Â Dig up that rusty Red Rider or take a wheelbarrow or utility cart -you’ll look like a pro.
3. Â Cash, Check or Charge? Find out ahead of time. Better yet, just take a small wad of cash so you are limited to your list items.
4. Â Hat and Comfy Shoes. Â Some plant sales are located on large properties. Be comfortable, not miserable while you search.
5. Â Plant ASAP. It may be rainy and overcast today, but the summer will heat up and you’ll want to have those babies in the ground! Water so root systems will settle in with no stress.
Most of all, make it fun. Annie drove up with a cooler of fruit, almonds and a jug of water for each of  us..WOW.
see you
